FUNDRAISERS are celebrating after a new women’s health unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital was approved by civic planners.

The proposals for the Jigsaw Building, which will also house the cancer and blood disorders unit, have been given the green light and work is due to start this autumn with a potential completion date late next year.

Based between the eye unit and Derwent Suite for Orthopaedics, the Jigsaw building will be split over two floors and be a centre of excellence for oncology, haematology, gynaecology, breast care and early pregnancy.

The hospital Trust’s director of service development Richard Renaut said: “It is great news that the plans have been approved and we now look forward to the work starting.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the project and all the dedicated fundraisers who have supported our cause. Our staff have worked hard to ensure the plans are right and that they reflect the feedback we have received.”

The views of employees, patients and the public have been incorporated into the designs for the new building which will remain on show in the hospital’s main atrium.

Earlier this month more than 50 people attended an event to see a virtual walkthrough of the proposed building, showing plans for improved facilities for cancer treatments.
