WEYMOUTH’S Laser Radial sailor Jon Emmett has managed to complete the treble in 2013 – winning the Nationals, the Inlands and finishing top of the UK rankings.

Here the 36-year-old, from Westham, reflects on a productive year.

“Well, I am really pleased with the way the domestic season has ended.

“During the Olympic year, it is always hard to focus on my own sailing, as I always put the person I am coaching first.

“It is, of course, especially difficult when you keep having to fly back from China to do British events.

“I think nothing can compare to seeing Lijia Xu winning Olympic gold at my home town of Weymouth and then topping the year with Lijia becoming female World Sailor of the Year – and now elected to be part of the ISAF Athlete’s commission.

“Having said that, it is nice to have a quieter time, more time for family and friends and the chance to do my own sailing. It is the first time I have been able to race both the Nationals and the Inlands in the same year.

“Managing to get the triple is especially good as it has been a windy year, which is really not my strong suit.

“Now, I have a brief time off before I fly to Oman for the World Championships.

“A little break from sailing will rekindle my enthusiasm, besides the conditions will be so different in Oman, it would make training days in Weymouth seem like a completely different sport.”
