IF a two-seater sports car is a shot of energy drink for those who love speed, then the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is something of a fine wine for the connoisseur.

Because the way it delivers speed is not neck-breaking, or throw-you-back-in-your-seat, but it’s a rush of automotive perfection.

This car is an all-round luxury speed machine, hitting, in the 640d M Sport that I tested, 62mph in a mere 5.4 seconds.

In sport mode it is a total delight, not putting a foot wrong as it applies its 313hp to the road in a flawless way, yet still managing nearly 50 to the gallon when you drop things back to comfort or eco mode.

It looks beautiful from the outside – with the M Sport enjoying extra styling cues – and on the inside it is a wonderfully high-end place to sit and dispatch the miles with ease.

Rear seat passengers can relax in practically airline style, while the driver can benefit from a head-up display and a bunch of toys, including multiple cameras to assist parking, one of which pops out neatly from behind the BMW badge on the boot.

The optional harman/kardon stereo system is a beauty, while ConnectedDrive means you are always linked to BMW and the emergency services whenever you need them.

The office function means that you can take your schedule, emails and so on with you and you can even surf the web.

It all adds up to a car that really does have it all.

But it all comes back to an epic driving experience. For those that truly appreciate their cars and awesome engineering, there is little to beat the feel and experience of piloting the 6 Series.

It is a flawless, perfectly formed machine that is one of the most rewarding drives out there, combined with space, luxury and practicality.

You can also have your 6 in coupe and convertible flavour and performance peaks in the 650i, which ducks to 4.6 seconds to 62mph from its 450hp.

But they’re all quick, very quick, and thoroughly rewarding to drive.

Prices start at a shade under £60,000 for the coupe and Gran Coupe, while the convertible is from £65,330.
