RSPB Arne Nature Reserve has been selected as one of 20 places across the south west to benefit from a share of £527,000 National Lottery cash.

The money, from the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be used by to improve accessibility to the reserve for disabled and deaf visitors.

The reserve, which featured on the BBC's Autumnwatch and Winterwatch programmes, will benefit from an all-terrain mobility scooter and a range of large-print interpretation signs, and a British Sign Language video and a visual story, for people with autism.

The programme at Arne will be delivered in partnership with disability charity Living Options Devon. It will be led by a team of disabled and deaf volunteers and advisors.

Bekki Williams, of the RSPB in Dorset, said: "We are delighted to be working with the Heritage Ability team at Living Options Devon.

"Using their skills and experience we can really develop the offer at RSPB Arne so that people of all abilities are able to enjoy the fantastic wildlife and landscapes of the reserve."

Staff at the reserve, near Wareham, will also be given additional disability awareness and deaf awareness training.
