CHICKERELL United progressed to the third round of the Dorset Senior Trophy with a diligent win over Broadstone at the Stalls.

Matt Stickland was the hero for the Chickens, tapping home the rebound after a Steve Welch shot was parried by the Broadstone goalkeeper.

The victory earned Shaun Murphy’s men a tie against Parley Sports, who ply their trade one division higher in the Dorset Premier League, after their 5-1 thrashing of Bridport Reserves.

Speaking to Echosport after the Chickens’ latest triumph, Murphy was pleased to come out on top of an “end-to-end” cup game.

He said: “It was a very good win. They were a good side. In the first half it was a real cup game, end-to-end stuff.

“Both keepers made some excellent saves but we managed to get the goal after 30 minutes.

“Steve took it round the keeper but he got a hand to it and Matt just put it in.

“From there it felt like a real cup match, it was a hard-fought victory, really.”

Asked whether Chickerell were looking to go on a cup run, Murphy was cautious.

“I think with the side we have got we’ll just go into each game and see how we get on.

“We’ve drawn Parley in the next round and they’re a league above us, so we’ll see.

Murphy was also encouraged by the performance of his reserves’ players as Chickerell earned another home win.

“We had a few missing. Some of the lads have come up from the reserves’ side and they held their own easily and didn’t look out of place at all.

“We’re making the Stalls a fortress. You try and do your best in the home games and pick up what you can from the away games,” he said.
