The original Swanage Pier was built primarily for shipping Purbeck stone from local quarries.
The wooden structure, constructed around 1859-1860, featured a tramway running along its length and part of the Swanage seafront.
The pier later began accommodating steamer services for passengers but the limitations of the structure soon became apparent.
Construction began on a new pier in 1895, and the first steamer arrived at the partially completed jetty the following year.
The new Swanage Pier was officially opened in 1897.
Passenger steamer services ended in 1966, and after restoration plans fell flat, Swanage Pier Trust took over ownership and began extensive restoration efforts.
Today Swanage Pier stands as a testament to its enduring legacy, serving as a popular tourist destination and a vital part of Swanage’s heritage.
