FIREFIGHTERS extinguished a late night moped fire which started "deliberately" last night in Bournemouth

A moped parked on the pavement in Gerald Road at the junction with King’s Road, Charminster, was on fire at around 2am on Wednesday, April 24.

Crews from Springbourne fire station tackled the blaze, which had spread to a nearby parked Citroën C3 Picasso and fence, with a hose reel jet.

Daylight revealed the moped severely charred and a shell of its former self, with the grey Citroen left with a melted and charred front wing.

The pavement, too, was left charred and the fence burnt down.

Police are now investigating the fire, which is believed to have been started deliberately.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "We received a report from the fire service at 2.17am stating they were in attendance at a vehicle fire involving a moped in Gerald Road in Bournemouth.

"It was further reported that the fire had spread to a nearby fence and another vehicle.

"Officers attended and found fire had been extinguished. Following liaison with the fire service, it is believed the fire may have been started deliberately.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. No arrests have been made."

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service's spokeswoman added: "A crew from Springbourne were called to Gerald Road at 2.10am this morning following reports of a vehicle fire.

"On arrival, firefighters found a moped well alight, which they extinguished using a hose reel jet.

"The moped was completely destroyed by fire and adjacent fencing was also damaged. Our stop was in at 2.36am and the incident handed over to our police colleagues."
