TEENAGERS and young adults in Dorset will be given a sporting chance thanks to a major initiative launched on Boscombe beach.

The beach was one of a number of areas across the country selected to mark the national launch of Sportivate, a £32million National Lottery fund.

It aims to encourage 14 to 25-year-olds who are not currently involved in sport to take up an activity of their choice and is linked to the 2012 Olympics.

Dorset’s £400,000 share will allow nearly 4,000 young people in the county to receive six to eight weeks coaching and sports groups have been urged to apply for funding through the Active Dorset County Sports Partnership.

John Drennan of Active Dorset said: “A lot of people have been put off sport for different reasons, perhaps at school or in another setting.

“We hope they will be encouraged to take up something different, not just the traditional sports such as football or tennis, although they will also be available.”

He said groups which may be able to provide sporting opportunities are urged to apply for funding by calling Active Dorset on 01202 966733.
