Red carpet launch for Bournemouth Air Festival 2010

More stories about: Bournemouth Air Festival

THEY launched it like a Hollywood blockbuster, complete with red carpet at the Odeon cinema in Westover Road, Bournemouth.

It wasn’t hard to see why.

Because Bournemouth Air Festival already IS a record-breaker, the biggest free event of its kind in the UK, and from August 19 to 22 this year they are promising even more.

Film footage of 2009’s spectacular previewed all the favourites which are coming back – The Red Arrows, this year flying with their first female pilot, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Eurofighter Typhoon and, hopefully, the Vulcan bomber.

Following their beach assaults last year, the Royal Marines will return, supported by a strong presence from the Royal Navy, who are bringing two ships to the bay.

As Royal Marine reservists and the combined cadet force from Canford School surrounded him on the stage, Commodore Jamie Miller said: “For us in 2010 this is the only event in the country receiving this level of Royal Navy presence.”

He told the Daily Echo that the town’s warm support for the service clinched the Naval support, and pledged to get 500 visitors per day on board minehunter HMS Bangor, currently on operation in the Gulf.

In the skies above, the town will be hosting the service’s famous Black Cats helicopter display team, for the first time led by a woman.

Lt Becky Frater, of the Royal Naval Air Station at Yeovilton, said: “I can’t wait. I’m going to give 100 per cent to this festival. I’ve got a lot to live up to after last year’s dynamic show. It’s going to be crowd focused, with lots of vertical moves to excite the public.”

Lt Frater, who enjoyed air shows as a child, added: “I love that I’m taking part now and may be inspiring children to grow up and join one day.”

Festival organisers want this year’s visitors to stay longer and see more, taking time to enjoy everything the town has to offer, from food and accommodation to the free events running as part of the Night Air programme in the Gardens.

The military “villages” will have an expanded role and a lifesize Eurofighter Typhoon will be parked on the Pier Approach, alongside the replica Chinook which delighted so many visitors last summer.

Organisers are keen to involve the business community and Patron Packages start at £200.

Bournemouth’s head of tourism Mark Smith said: “From the 1.3 million visitors we generated £30 million worth of income for the town. And the air festival has helped create an additional 650 jobs for the local economy.”

Am I one of a few who thinks Bournemouth Air Show is a bit blown up? As a kid, I loved the airshows we went to. You could walk around looking at the aircraft on the ground as well as see the spectacular air displays. I guess standing in a massive crowd and watching them for free is better than nothing, but there is no ambience. Does anyone else agree?

Yes.
In fact I am going to write to my local council and ask them for a reduction in my Council Tax due to the noise and general inconvenience caused by the sudden influx of thousands of extra cars into my home area, which severely affect my quality of life.

It's a pity the organisers of the show totally fail to consider how their 'extravaganza' affects the residents. Of course, it's all about the WORSHIP of MONEY. That has far more of an appeal to them than respecting those of us who live here.

Perhaps someone could set up a side show to run concurrently with the air show, to demonstrate the latest ground to air missiles and what effect they have on fast moving jet powered aircraft?
What's wrong with that? British companies exhibiting British technology for the destruction of war planes. It's very patriotic.

I'm with you Trish1. Unless you are a bit of an anorak once is enough.

Mind you if you believe the figures (1.3 million visitors generating £30m) it's making someone happy!

I agree with you all, once is enough, now take the show elsewhere and inconvenience other people.
Even political parties don't use the same venue every year, so to relieve the strain on local people.
Take your money making exhibit somewhere else. Many don't want it on their doorstep.

If you don't like it don't live in a torist town. Your own fault for living here! Stop moaning about something that brings so much benefit to Bournemouth. If you like quite go live in Poole!

...we don't like airshows, we don't like surf reefs, we don't want anyone ever doing anything exciting... or possibly fun.

Want it different?

Get out and do something about it, build an indoor attraction... set up your own festival... run for MP... just please stop moaning, it's so tiresome.

The problem with Bournemouth is the old people who moved here thinking of it as a retirement place just for them, and think all the young people and anything new or exciting is not for them so they will moan about everything and anything, an airshow that is FREE togo to generates so much money and tourism for the town is amazing and for 1 long weekend in the summer to moan about this and the inconveinence it may cause you i think you lot are very selfish and lucky just a minority and as soon as your gone the better for the town to move on a build/create a new bournemouth which is out dated cause of you lot moaning everytime some new or different is planned.
It's like when AFCB built there new stadium a few years back the local people around complained about it what do you expect if you buy a place near a football stadium or if you buy near the airport/railway track are people so stupid that one day these thing will redevelop.
constructive critism is what we need not because its not to your taste....

How desperately sad some peoples lives must be that they cannot suffer just four days without tranquillity.

If it is really that bothersome then you have been given ample opportunity to organise a weekends idyll away from here.

My only hope is that Bournemouth Council and The Echo support the work of the hundreds of people in this area who organise events without the help of paid staff, and a massive budget. Bournemouth is not just about one event support all the others to please. One final point why is the Air Festival held in August when Bournemouth is full of beach goers anyway? And how do they differentiate between normal summer income and "Air Festival" income?

LOL - live in a tourist town by the sea, then moan when visitors come! All those people cluttering up the beach in the Summer are a real pain. Coming down and spending their money to keep the local infrastructure solvent.

I believe Bolton doesn't suffer from a big influx of visitors in the Summer and property's quite cheap.

Give it a try you whingers. Bring on the Vulcan and Eurofighter!

The first comment I read on this story, I was inclined to agree that the Air Pageant that was annually held at Hurn was far better, as one had a close up view of the aircraft, rather than just flying displays. Then I read the moans and whinges of those who are only concerned for themselves, and revel in the non enjoyment of others. The Air Festival is a huge plus for the town, which generates a huge income. The show itself is second to none, producing a fantastic aerial display of the old and new technology of the Armed Services and Civilian Display organisations. It is so sad, when everyone knows what is going on in the world as far as our servicemen and women, that we cannot have a four day period whereby in a small way we demonstrate how much we do think of them, and enjoy the displays they give to the town. I agree with the person who said, take a hike and spend a weekend away out on some downs somewhere and allow the true townsfolk of Bournemouth to enjoy something given to us for our enjoyment. All I ask is that the Council spend the £30m wisely, and not on stupid unwarranted projects that no one wants.

BH10et, the £30 million goes to a local businessman, the show organiser, not the council. No doubt he's an inspired individual and won't keep it for himself - NOT!

As a family, we all love the airshow. We fully embrace the whole festival. It's free, it's a few days on the beach, the atmosphere is great and it makes a huge stash of tax cash. I don't see any downfalls apart from more traffic and visitors for a few days, to me it's well worth the hassle!

I think the air show is fantastic and one year was delighted to see the Lancaster Bomber fly low over my house. I always walk into to town at least once to see the show and it's great to see so many people young and old enjoying it.

However I have in the past known people complain to the Airport about the noise of the Red Arrows! Just incredible.

Maybe combining the beach show with some event at Hurn for a couple of the days so that people could get up close and see some small displays there would be a good idea. Logistically much more to do, but some people would pay to see the planes in a different situation than just flying past the pier?

(Obviously this doesn't apply to all those who've moved to Bolton to escape the bloody visitors in the Summer).

Save the council and us council tax payers a few bob if the organisers could arrange for the Royal Marines to do an assault with demolition charges on the Imax!

I don't have an issue with the airshow, it's nice to have something interesting happen in Bournemouth. I would however like to know where this £30 million pound income has gone to. Of course businesses will benefit, but how much of this money goes into the council coffers for the benefit of the town? I haven't seen any evidence of it. All we hear about is services being cut left right & centre.
It would be nice if this year a free programme of events was available (putting it online costs nothing), and that the big glossy programme was available outside of the town centre.

BH10et, Bournemouth says...

Perhaps an addition to the Air Festival would be for the organisers to lay on a shuttle service to the Air Museum at Hurn, where visitors can get a close up of some types of aircraft, Or the museum putting a display on at the sea front. Secondly, perhaps the organisers/council would like to come on to this thread and list what the £30m is being used for, or how it was distributed.

Air Festival announcements have alway brought the whingers and moaners out... same this time round it seems.
Apart from bringing financial input to business's and the town in general.. it is part of British heritage. It's laid on free for the on-lookers. Or do you prefer to pay watch it ? (That can be easily arranged - if need be).
Quit moaning and get over it !!
The Air Festival is here to stay - due to public responses from last 2 years.

More noise this year I hope from Tiffie and Vulcan... :))

Completely wrong. The £30 million quoted is the amount the council claims goes to local businesses through tourism etc.

One of the sad facts is that the out-of-town fast-food, mobile bars and so on that pitch up on the seafront for the festival deprive many of those local businesses - which provide local employment and pay rates to the council all year - of so much of those potential earnings.

What a revealing set of comments,
there would be both people and animals that would suffer from the noise that is generated by the vulcan and therefore it should keep its routine off shore, the rest of the exhibits are not really offensive, but what is offensive is the selfish arrogant comments of people here, who like to attack those who maybe do not enjoy this kind of thing and simply wish to voice their opinion/concerns on this issue. For
myself I get bored with gazing at aircraft and dont mind either way.

You really should consider others/locals etc and not just yourselves. live let live.........
