THE annual Boxing Day charity game at Grove Corner once again proved a huge hit on Portland, with just more than £1,000 being raised in total.

Proceeds from the game went to Weldmar Hospicecare in memory of former Terras’ boss and Portland player Gerry Gow, who lost his battle against cancer in October aged 64.

The teams competing on the day in memory of the former Manchester City and Bristol City man were a Weymouth Old Boys XI, managed by Brendon King, against a Portland Old Boys XI, managed by Nick Preston. The game itself finished 4-4.

Speaking about the event, organiser Darren Whyton told Echosport: “Weymouth had a good side and Portland had a good side as well.

“It finished 4-4 and Portland were 4-0 down at one point. It was a good game, to be honest. Pete Turrell was the referee and gave us (Portland) a couple of penalties!

He added: “We raised £941 for the game which was brilliant, it’s probably one of the best figures we have ever raised.

“Then, someone won the 100 club draw on the day and he donated that to us, so we have raised just more than £1,000 now.

“It all goes to Weldmar Hospice in memory of Gerry and all his family were there. I play darts with his son Chris and he also came on in the second half.

“Josh Camp scored a couple of goals as well, who is Gerry’s grandson.”
