DOWNTON 2

WEYMOUTH RESERVES 3

WEYMOUTH Reserves battled back for a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Downton in tricky conditions.

It was a game played on a difficult pitch, which wasn’t helped by the downpour of rain, and this made the comeback all the more impressive.

The Terras didn’t get off to the best of start as Downton took the lead within the first minute, before being awarded and converting a penalty 10 minutes later to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

But despite the early setback the Terras fought back, first through a strike by forward Conor Jevon, and then through a penalty before half-time which was scored by Sean Stewart.

After going in level at the break, it didn’t take long for Weymouth to take the lead, as they were awarded another penalty just 10 minutes into the second half, which Stewart converted with ease.

The Terras had ample opportunity to extend the lead, hitting the woodwork and missing one-on-one opportunities, but overall manager Bradley Asagba couldn’t fault the dis- play.

He said: “We’ve had lots of chances and could have had more than three, but given how we started it would have been easy to give in but we didn’t.

“The game seemed to spur us on to try and get a result.

“We arguably could have won by a bigger margin and if we’d started how we should have done then it may well have far more comfortable.

“But to go away from home and be 2-0 down within 20 minutes, and to come back and win 3-2, we’re delighted.”

Speaking of his side’s slow start, Asagba was accepting of some of the blame.

He said: “Our focus wasn’t as it should be. We talked about it through the warm up and even as they left the dressing room to start the game, and for whatever reason we started on the back foot.

“Obviously I have to take responsibility for that as manager because I need to make sure their focus and determination is on point.

“I said to our team afterwards how pleased I was that they’ve stepped up. The conditions weren’t favourable, so we were really pleased to get the win.”
