DORCHESTER Town’s goalscoring hero Phil Ormrod has said how the manager’s decision to start him on Tuesday night was a big surprise.

The striker was formally announced as a Magpies’ player just an hour before kick-off, and Ormrod has said the entire evening, which saw the county town side beat Hayes & Yeading 2-1, was a great occasion.

He said: “It was a really good experience. I didn’t really know what to expect and certainly didn’t expect to be starting, so I was chucked in the deep end. But I really enjoyed it and was pleased with how it went.

“It was brilliant to get the winning goal. I’d put in a real shift and it was nice to get the reward and help to move the team closer to safety. Everyone was delighted with the win. They were saying how big a game it was and how vital it was to get three points so it was excellent and the guys were buzzing.”

The powerful frontman signed from Gillingham Town where he had scored an impressive 24 goals in 28 appearances this season, and Ormrod spoke of how it felt like the right time to make the move.

He said: “I had the opportunity to move at the start of the season, but for one reason or another it wasn’t the right time.

“But since a couple of mates (Gary Bowles and Jon Vance) have moved and Gillingham’s season has fizzled out, it just seemed to be the right time to make the move and give it a go.”

The Magpies go straight into another huge match tomorrow when they host Kings Langley (3pm), knowing that another positive result will all but secure their survival.
