CONFIDENT Portland captain Lewis Whyton insists the position the club are in at present, on and off the field, is “the best I have ever known it to be”.

The island stalwart, who played for the Blues the last time they were in the Wessex League Premier Division, also believes the league title is still well up for grabs for the Grove Corner side.

Portland go into their clash at Fareham tomorrow (3pm) just two points behind leaders Moneyfields, having played a game more – the leaders could be deducted three points however, for fielding a suspended player back in January.

Third-placed Blackfield & Langley are also still in with a shout of claiming the title.

Asked if he believed the Blues could go on to win the league, Whyton replied: “Yes. Now I do, yeah.

He added: “I don’t think anyone was expecting us to do what we are doing at the moment.

“You never know, if we win our last six games we will be close. I still think all three teams will maybe drop points, we have all got some tough games, so you never know.”

Speaking about the club’s progression as a whole, the skipper added: “I have been up there around 13 years and it’s the best I have ever known it to be up there, with the whole set-up on and off the field.

“I would say this is probably the best Portland squad I have played in, it’s very close if not. We haven’t got any weak links, just 15 or 16 very strong players.”
