PORTLAND United’s Ross Doidge admits he would like to know where the Blues stand as the race for the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division title hots up.

The island midfielder, who helped his side secure second spot in the league with a 1-0 victory over Sholing at Grove Corner on Saturday, insisted “we would like to know what is going on” with current leaders Moneyfields, who still have the threat of a three-point deduction hanging over them for fielding a suspended player back in January.

With three games to go, Portland have not given up hope of back-to-back titles following promotion last season as Wessex Division One champions.

They currently sit four points behind the leaders, but that could be down to just one if the deduction is confirmed.

Doidge told Echosport: “It would be nice to see Moneyfields get their points deduction now, rather than having to wait. We would like to know what is going on with that situation.

“But the win (against Sholing) keeps us in the hunt and that’s why we are here, that’s why we are playing for Portland.

“We have taken each game as it comes and have been trying to pick up as many points as possible. We have dropped stupid points now and then but, over the course of the season, there can’t be too many complaints.”

He added: “To be fair, I think amongst us we are a quietly confident bunch.

“As the season has gone on we have just gone from strength to strength.”

n The Blues have more reason to celebrate scooping the Wessex Premier Division club of the month prize for March. The accolade in Division One went to Weymouth Reserves.
