AN ELATED Gary Bailey labelled his side’s last-gasp 2-1 win at home to Bemerton Heath Harlequins, that keeps their title dreams alive, as one of the finest moments in his managerial career.

A 95th minute winner from Blues’ hot-shot Ryan McKechnie meant that the islanders will now see their fate decided off the field due to Moneyfields’, who they sit two points behind after both sides won on Saturday, appeal over the use of an ineligible player back in January.

That will be on Wednesday, but Bailey said he will be proud of his players whatever happens in that hearing.

Talking to Echosport, he said: “I’m elated. If I’m honest I didn’t think we were going to pull it (the victory) off.

“It wasn’t a great game and I knew that would be case and that is credit to Bemerton, who kept their integrity throughout.

“The pressure was all on us to perform and that team in the dressing room have proved time and time again that they’ve got that winning mentality.

“For the spectacle and the adrenaline rush, there is no better way of winning it.

“Those last 10 minutes along with the celebrations, that tops it for me.”

The result left the islanders on 99 points in what has been an incredible season for a side that were new to the Wessex League Premier Division.

However, with the league set to be settled off the pitch, the Portland manager admits there is an element of frustration surrounding the situation.

He added: “There is that frustration. I feel sorry for that group of players, who have been denied the opportunity to celebrate in front of nearly 250 fans at the end of 10 months of hard work.

“This is the same for Moneyfields.

“They had a home game and they’ve been denied it too. It’s their battle and the powers that be will make the decision.

“Going into the last weekend of the season, I think it is unsatisfactory not to know the destination for both clubs.”

Reflecting on the season, Bailey said: “This is my best squad. I’m extremely proud of them all, especially the lads that have been here since the start of this journey.

“We have a great dressing room and I’m delighted for everyone at the club.”
