PORTLAND United have been crowned Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division champions after leaders Moneyfields were handed a three-point deduction.

The Blues finished the season in second place, but have moved to the top of the pile after the FA rejected the leaders' appeal after fielding an ineligible player earlier this season.

Speaking of the decision, manager Gary Bailey couldn’t hide his delight.

He said: “We’re obviously elated, it’s more than we could ever wish for.
It was a bit of a strange feeling on Saturday not really knowing (what was going on) and having to wait to find out, but we’re ecstatic.

“To win back-to-back titles is just something you couldn’t write. I’m immensely proud of myself, the backroom staff, and the players.

"I’m also delighted for Robin Satherley, Dave Camp, Darren Whyton, the committee members and everybody behind the scenes at the club. It’s just a culmination of years of hard work to get to where we are, and it’s a fantastic achievement.

“All the credit for winning the league on the football pitch has to go to the players, they’re a fantastic group.

“From October onwards the run that we went on was just fantastic. It was an unconventional way to be crowned champions but that run of 28-games unbeaten, with four draws is the form of a team that deserve to win the league.”

Although delighted with the outcome of the hearing, Bailey sympathised with Moneyfields but feels the FA had little choice in the decision.

He said: “Everyone was in a tough position. We must mention Moneyfields as well, they’ve had a terrific season and gained promotion which was their ultimate goal.

“Everyone knows that they probably didn’t mean to field the player but at the end of the day the rules are there, and however they’ve been breached, whether it’s by accident or on purpose, the FA are there to make sure the rules are adhered to.

“As unfortunate a situation as it is for Moneyfields, I don’t think the FA had much of a choice.”

Portland United hairman Robin Satherley took the opportunity to hail the club’s fans.

He said: “I know the committee provide the facilities, but I’m more pleased for the players and our loyal supporters.

“We’ve had tremendous support this season the best gates in the Wessex League by a long way, so for them I’m absolutely delighted.

“I’m delighted for everybody connected to Portland United Football Club. It must be one of the best days this club has had in the last 30 or 40 years.”
