PORTLAND United manager Simon Browne has called for his side to be more clinical in front of goal ahead of the Blues’ Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division clash with Lymington Town at Grove Corner tonight (7.45pm).

Browne’s men followed up a 6-1 opening day defeat of Team Solent with a 1-1 draw away to Cowes Sports on Saturday, a game in which Portland missed several chances to extend a 1-0 lead before conceding a late equaliser.

And Browne told Echosport he is eager for his charges to right the wrongs of the previous games.

He said: “We didn’t kill the game off when we were 1-0 up. If those goals had gone in I’m quite confident we would have won the game. I just want us to be a little more clinical in front of goal.”

The Portland United boss also revealed he has been sent a report on Lymington by Hamworthy United manager Brendon King.

“Lymington will be a tough game,” he said. “I’ve had a report from Brendon King at Hamworthy about how they set up and how they play.

“But it’s not about the opposition, it’s about how we play and how we do things. We have set high standards and we want to maintain them as much as possible.

“They’re in the same league, they’re not three leagues up and I don’t have to do much scouting. I want us to be concentrating more on what we’re doing rather than what the opposition are doing,” he added.

The Blues are boosted by the return of Ryan McKechnie and Josh Camp, while Ross Doidge and San Buckler are expected to overcome respective shoulder and ankle problems, but Shane Evans remains injured.

Browne said: “Shane is still out, Ross and Sam have been carrying injuries. Ryan will be back after missing the Cowes game because of a wedding and Josh was unavailable but he’s back.

“I’ve also put in a couple of seven-day approaches too, they won’t come to fruition until Thursday, but squad wise we should be OK.

“We were a little bit thin on Saturday but fingers crossed there won’t be any more problems.”

Portland, who sit seventh on four points after two games, welcome Lymington, currently in ninth, for the second of three consecutive home Tuesday evening games.

Asked whether this was a potential advantage for his team, Browne said it was dependant on the distance the opposition had to travel.

“I guess it’s not ideal for those that have got to do a bit of travelling. We’ve got Hamworthy and Shaftesbury for the next two. They’re not arduous journeys. I’d rather have Petersfield come down!

“Hopefully we’ll have a decent crowd and we can continue on from the last time we played there,” he said.
