PORTLAND United boss Simon Browne admitted his players were “upset, annoyed and angry” after the concession of another later goal in their 2-2 draw with Petersfield Town at Grove Corner.

It was the fourth time this season that the Blues have conceded a late equaliser in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division, a fact that has cost Browne’s men a total of eight points so far.

Speaking to Echosport after the game, Browne felt that “poor decision making” had proved the difference in dropping two points.

He said: “Obviously they were upset, annoyed and angry. I thought it wasn’t really an issue that we conceded late goals. I think possibly it might be now.

“We were certainly a bit more nervy and it was poor decision making again. Hopefully they will learn and learn a bit quicker.

“That’s eight points we have dropped from winning positions now and it’s a tad frustrating to say the least.”

Sam Buckler and Lewis Whyton twice gave Portland the lead, but the Rams pegged them back each time courtesy of Luke Walker and Sean Evans.

Talking through the goals, Browne said missed chances left his side in the “nervous 90s”.

“Sam got the first one. A corner came into the box, it was a bit of a melee and he poked it over the line. They got back into the game 20 minutes in with a 25-yard volley into the top corner.

“Half-time we changed the formation a little bit and with 20 minutes to go I popped Lewis up front and he got on the end of a cross to put us 2-1 up.

“Ultimately we didn’t score the one, two or three goals we deserved and it left us in the nervous 90s again.

“The bottom line is that we’ve got to kill sides off and put those goals away, that’s four games now. I think in every single one of them we’ve had chances to put them away,” he said.

Reflecting on the performance, Browne was pleased with an improved second-half display, with new signing Sanchez Baker appearing for the final 45 minutes.

“We were poor in the first half. I told a few of them that they needed to up their game. I put Sanchez Baker on at half-time to give us more of a presence up front.

“We missed some very presentable chances and hit the post at 2-1 when it looked easier to score,” he said.
