POOLE BOROUGH 1

CHICKERELL UNITED 3

CHARLIE Rodgers scored his first goal for two years as Chickerell United took a 3-1 win at Poole Borough in the Dorset Senior League.

The Chickens had to hold off a fight back from the home side but Chickerell responded well in the second half to add to the scoreline and take the victory.

Matt Harvey and Nick Etherington returned for Chickerell after being unavailable for the 2-1 loss at Wincanton Town Reserves in midweek.

The away side started well and grabbed the early goal after two minutes through Rodgers, who fired in from an Adam Stewart cross.

The Chickens then extended their lead after 15 minutes after a free-kick caused a goalmouth scramble in the Poole penalty box and the returning Clayton Heath rounded the goalkeeper and poked in.

Poole responded and got themselves back into the game and began crafting half-chances with crosses that went close to being finished and they had a shot that went wide.

The hosts got a goal back after 35 minutes when a cross arrived on the edge of the Chickerell box, a shot came in provoking a goalmouth scramble that ended in Frankie White narrowing the deficit for the home side.

Borough ended the first half on top, despite the fast start from the Chickens who led at the end of the first half 2-1.

In the second half, the Chickens responded well and pushed back the resurgence of the home side.

After 75 minutes, Neil Dewey took the ball from a Poole player, passed the ball to Matt Stickland who then threaded it through to Nick Voss who scored into the bottom right-hand corner, to put more space between the two sides.

Chickerell manager Shaun Murphy said: “It is always a tricky place to go, Turlin Moor.

“We have had a couple of bad results so we had to put that right. It was a really good win I thought. We knew we had to play it right.

“We need three points now, it is not about winning 10-0 it is about getting the three points at the end of the day.

When asked how Rodgers and Heath were after scoring their goals Murphy said: “I can tell you after the game they were happy!”

The Chickens then drew 0-0 against Dorchester Sports Reserves to move one point clear above Corfe Castle at the league’s summit.

Chickerell’s next league match sees them travel to Allendale on Saturday, May 5 (3pm).
