CHICKERELL UNITED 3

NICK Voss hit a brace and Dan Welch grabbed a goal as Chickerell United continued their superb winning start with a 3-0 win over Witchampton United in the Dorset Senior League.

The Chickens were without last season’s top goalscorer Matt Stickland and James Hansford after they picked up injuries in last week’s 4-0 win over Wincanton Town Reserves.

As a result of the absences Dylan Ellis made his debut for Chickerell while Voss went up front for the Chickens in a repeat of a fixture that ended 7-5 to Chickerell last season.

The Chickens went ahead early after five minutes following a great move down the left-hand side and the ball came to Voss on the edge of the box and he smashed into the back of the net.

From here, Witchampton retaliated and put Chickerell under a spell of real pressure.

Chickerell had to defend well and managed to see out the pressure however, and were able to gain free-kicks that the home side was defending very well.

Despite this, Chickerell would extend their lead after 25 minutes and it came from a free-kick.

Matt Harvey delivered a wonderful ball in from the right-hand side and Welch was on the back post to nod in for the Chickens.

Voss then managed to get a good strike in but it was blocked to safety by the Witches.

However, his next effort would not be stopped as he scored his fourth goal in two games. Voss took aim with a powerful shot from the edge of the box that bulldozed its way into the net for Chickerell’s third of the game.

The first half ended with Chickerell well in front and cruising to victory.

The second half saw a very professional performance from Chickerell as they managed the match well keeping the ball and prompting their goalkeeper into numerous good saves.

However, the Chickens could not add to their lead as they held on for a 3-0 win and their second consecutive win at the start of the season.

Chickerell manager, Shaun Murphy said: “It was a pretty controlled game to be honest.

“It was a very good start, like we always wanted.”

Referring to Voss, Murphy said: “When Vossy gets a shot it’s normally on target, he is very good with his left foot or right foot it generally goes in. Without Matt Stickland he has stepped up and done the business.”

Chickerell travel to Tisbury United on Saturday (3pm).

Chickerell: Bickerstaffe, Cracknell, Rogers, James, Sandeman, Ellis (Dewey 65), Welch, Harvey, McCarthy (Miller 70), Voss, Etherington.
