WEYMOUTH’s Warren Bentley insisted that the result was more important as his first goal for the club sealed a 2-2 draw at home against Hartley Wintney in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

Bentley’s goal, which came in the 90th minute, rescued a draw for the Terras, who had been 2-0 down after 77 minutes after goals from Michael Campbell and Jacques Kpohomouth.

When asked how it felt to get off the mark, Bentley told Echosport: “It was more important that we got a result, with us not playing next week due to the FA Cup rounds so to not go into the two-week break with another loss is more important.

“We fought hard in that last 10 minutes to kind of make up for the first 80 minutes.”

His goal was greeted with a ferocious roar from the home crowd, who had shown audible signs of frustration after the first goal and the closing stages of the first half.

Despite the draw the Terras remain top of the table, level on points but ahead of five other teams on goal difference.

When asked about the roar, Bentley said: “I think there was a lot of frustration from not only the fans but the players.

“We did not play to our potential but the spirit we showed in the last 10 minutes, I think it was more relief more than anything.”

Weymouth almost went on to win the match in the closing stages, throwing everything at the Row, with Brandon Goodship having an effort blocked.

Bentley said: “It was one of those, obviously (referring to the 4-3 defeat at Farnborough) we know what it is like when we get pegged back and the momentum was on our side but you have got to be quite cautious with five minutes to go because you do not want to fight back from 2-0 and then end up letting in another goal in the last five minutes.

“We were fighting hard for that goal. Goody (Brandon Goodship) had a really good chance but it was blocked on the six-yard line and it would have been good to cap off that performance with a winner but it was not to be.”

The Terras now have a two-week break until their next match against Staines Town on September 29 and Bentley said the side will make use of it.

Bentley said: “As a team we have looked a little bit leggy over the last couple of weeks so I think getting in training, we have got a lot of things to work on, we have had a tough couple of weeks but we are still top of the league on goal difference.

“It is very tight up there, there are six teams level at the top so we will use those two weeks to regroup, analyse our performances.

“We will go through what we need to work on and get everyone back into good shape and good fitness so we can get going this season in two weeks time.”
