Charmouth
The beach is a mixture of shingle with an expanse of sand when the tide is out.
Where is it? Off the A35 between Bridport and Lyme Regis.
Best features: Sheltered and great for families.
Local facilities & shops: There are two cafes, a fossil shop, the Heritage Coast Centre and a clothes shop.
Great for the kids? The sea can be dangerous and care must be taken, but there is sand for them to play on.
How far are the loos? Just up from the beach.
Parking: There are three charge car parks.
Public transport: Charmouth is on local bus routes.
How about pets: In the early summer, dogs are not allowed on the west end of the beach but can be exercised on the east side. After July 1, dogs are only allowed on the east side before 9am and after 6pm.
Other points of interest: Charmouth is excellent for fossil hunting – it has been a goldmine for fossil enthusiasts for the past 250 years – but relics can only be taken from the beach, not the cliffs for safety reasons.
