Lyme Regis
Lyme Regis is a classic old-fashioned seaside town with narrow winding streets and immense character.
The newly-replenished and enlarged sandy beach is perfect for families and the new, wider promenade - from the Cobb to town - has made access much easier. A shingle beach is nearby.
Where is it? On the A3052 on the border between Devon and Dorset.
Best features: The picturesque setting and famous Cobb which juts out into the sea.
Local facilities & shops: Lyme has a wide selection of shops, fossil shops, souvenir shops and pubs as well as a cinema and theatre.
Great for the kids? The main beach is sandy and flat, and the water is beautifully clear.
How far are the loos? By the beach and throughout the town.
Parking: There is charge parking for 500 cars plus spaces for disabled drivers.
Public transport: The nearest train station is at Axminster and there are regular buses to and through the town.
How about pets? Dogs are banned from the beach in the summer months.
Other points of interest: Lyme Regis became famous after the Cobb appeared in The French Lieutenant’s Woman, starring Meryl Streep.
Fancy that! In 1823 Mary Anning found a plesiosaur fossil in the blue lias at Lyme Regis. This was a completely new species unknown anywhere else in the world.

Town Mill Restored working watermill, parts of which date back to 1340. Also a cafe, gardens and craft studios. Tues-Sun, 11am-4pm plus bank holidays and half-terms. 01297 443579.
