Overcombe

This sheltered shingle beach offers safe swimming and is one of Dorset’s main windsurfing and watersport centres.

Where is it? At Overcombe Corner, a mile to the east of Weymouth on the A353.

Best features: Water is clean and safe and the beach is usually quiet. It is an easy, flat,30-minute walk into the centre of Weymouth.

Local facilities & shops: There is a café right on the beach and another one a short walk up Bowleaze Hill. There is also a good family pub with large garden, post office, bus stop and shop selling a comprehensive range of goods.

Great for the kids? Although it is a pebble beach, the sea is shallow and safe and there is plenty of room to run around.

How far are the loos? In both cafes and the pub, plus public loos on the main road.

Parking: Charge car parks on the beach and 50 yards away along the main road (there is a pedestrian crossing) plus a large car park 300m on the main road towards Weymouth.

Public transport: Buses run to and from Weymouth every 15 minutes.

How about pets? Dogs allowed but there are no dog bins.

Other points of interest: Lodmoor Nature Reserve and Weymouth Sea Life Park are 10 minutes’ gentle stroll away from Overcombe Corner.

Wet weather options:

Weymouth Sea Life Park See the penguins, otters, sharks, marine secrets, rays, conger eels, play area, adventure trail. All-day entry. Open daily from 10am. 01305 788255.

Cineworld Nine-screen cinema at the heart of Weymouth, showing the latest films, adjoining car park. Open daily. 01305 768759.
