FORMER Cherries winger Antonio Diaz has signed for Wimborne Town and could feature in Saturday’s Southern League South clash with Gosport Borough (3pm).

Diaz had recently been released from his contract at Dorchester Town, where he initially signed in December 2017.

The 20-year-old spent the start of the 2018-19 season at Weymouth before re-signing for Dorchester in October 2018.

Earlier in the week, Wimborne manager Danny Holmes told Radio Wimborne: “Moving forwards we need to strengthen.

“(The players) are competitive and they’ve got to compete for the shirt. They’ve looked a bit flat and tired recently.”

Diaz scored 11 goals in 38 appearances for Dorchester last season but has played 16 times this term without finding the net.

He had been at Cherries since he was eight years old, appearing for them at under-18 and under-21 level.

Following Diaz’s release, Dorchester boss Callum Brooks said in a club statement: “Following a chat with Antonio a few weeks ago where I explained his opportunities would be more limited this season due to a couple of reasons, Antonio felt that he needed a new challenge.

“I have enjoyed working with Antonio, who was instrumental in our survival late last season, and didn’t want to stand in his way.

“I wish Antonio all the best and thank him for his efforts during my time at the club.”
