CHERRIES striker Callum Wilson said he “always believed” he would play for England, and now hopes he is part of Gareth Southgate’s plans for the European Championship in the summer.

Wilson spent time on loan at Kettering Town and Tamworth while on the books at Coventry City, but always backed himself to represent his country.

Speaking to JOE.co.uk, Wilson said: “I always believed. I always felt like I would play for England, I’d play in the Premier League, that I’d score for my country and have a successful career.

“At the minute, I’m ticking all the boxes. I just need to stay a Premier League player for as long as I can.”

Wilson made his England debut in November 2018, scoring in the 3-0 friendly win against the United States. Since then, Gareth Southgate has named him in every international squad.

Speaking about his prospects of playing in the European Championship, Wilson said: “This could be my only opportunity I get to play in an international competition.

“You don’t know what’s around the corner, so you’ve got to make sure you’re grasping and seizing every opportunity that’s in front of you.”

The 27-year-old faces fierce competition, however, from the likes of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Tammy Abraham.

Wilson said: “I’ve never been one to shy away from competition. I enjoy it. I thrive off competition and proving people wrong.

“For me, the more players that are English and strikers, in my position that are doing well, the better it is for me.

“It gives me that extra boost to be like ‘right, make sure you’re not getting comfortable', and you’ve got something to work towards.

“Last (international) camp, I was in the squad with Tammy as well and Harry and Marcus. All great players, great talent. There’s no reason we all can’t be there.

“Everyone’s fighting for the same thing. We all bring something different and unique to the squad and I’m sure the manager has a place for us within that, which is why were all selected last camp.

“It’s just basically showing a good attitude, always run, with a smile on your face and just be patient.

“There’s so many great players, you have to wait your turn and be patient for the opportunity.”
