I WAS so sad to read that the Retired Nurses National Home behind Bournemouth Hospital is having to close.

My lovely mother was lucky enough to move there in July 2019 when I was unable to keep her safe at home with me.

She remained there until she succumbed to Covid in April 2020 at the age of 98.

Our daily visits were prevented by lockdown and we waved at her first floor window as Mothering Sunday, her birthday and Easer sped by.

The staff were incredible calling us so that we could sing to her on Facetime.

I can’t speak highly enough of the care she received.

It was an oasis of calm driving in, avoiding the suicidal pheasants.

We would sit in her room watching the rabbits on the lawn and the pet tortoise being exercised.

I will never forget the incongruity of an alpaca alighting the lift before going to visit her room.

I’m glad she was able to spend the last months of her life surrounded by such amazing people.

I will remain eternally grateful and wish them all well.
