Hawkins 2, Roberts 90+4
Clarke 19, Godfrey 42

ADAM Roberts scored with the last kick of the game to deny Portland United victory as they drew 2-2 with Lymington Town in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

Harry Hawkins scored for the Linnets in the second minute, before goals from Lewis Clarke and Alex Godfrey turned the match around to see Portland leading 2-1 by the 42nd minute before the last kick of the game saw Roberts get the equalising goal for Lymington.

The hosts made a bright start and took the lead when a ball was hit forward and Hawkins ran on to it and fired past Sean Lillington in the Portland goal.

Portland found it hard to get into the game in the early stages but levelled through Clarke in the 19th minute.

The striker was played through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to level the scores.

From then on, the Blues were on top and created numerous chances before they went in front on 42 minutes.

Tom Bearwish went on a great run into the box down the left-hand side and put it on a plate for Godfrey from three yards out.

In the second half, Lymington again started well but Portland weathered the storm.

Ryan McKechnie was put clean through on goal but miscontrolled the ball which ran through to the goalkeeper, who spilled it but McKechnie could not get back on to the ball to fire home.

Godfrey then had a good opportunity but could not get his shot away as Portland looked to extend their lead.

Late on, Lymington began to commit more men forward for the last 10 minutes as Portland looked to protect their lead.

Lymington got the equaliser as a ball came in from a corner and Roberts got his heel on the ball to hit it into the near post after a mass melee in front of the line.

Portland interim manager Gary Bailey said: “I think we are all pretty gutted to be fair.

“The lads were terrific, they played their hearts out in really tough conditions and for the lion’s share of it deserved to be in the lead.

About equaliser Bailey said: “One header, one kick away and we would have been coming away with a deserved three points.

“It is disappointing but I am not disappointed with the performance.”
