DORCHESTER Sports were gunned down by a Westland Sports fightback in their 3-1 Dorset Premier League loss at Alvington Lane.

Ashley James’ men began the match well and deservedly took the lead when Jamie Rawlings took advantage of a mix-up between the Westland’s goalkeeper and a defender to slot home.

However, the hosts comeback was ignited on 35 minutes when Jamie Irwin converted a spot-kick, earned when Brandon Heal and Jason Read combined to give away a foul.

In the second-half, visiting gloveman Anthony Frost was unfortunate to concede a second when a routine cross cannoned off Joshua Payne, lobbing the stricken keeper and giving Payne a tap-in for 2-1.

As the away side poured forward in search of a leveller, Westland struck on 80 minutes with a fine counter-attacking goal as substitute Steve Ormrod found the top corner to settle the result.

Dorchester continued to fight and saw Gareth Will hit the bar deep into stoppage-time.

Speaking to Echosport following the loss, which leaves James’ side in sixth place, the losing manager admitted the Clayson Stadium outfit had given Westland a “good scare”.

He said: “It was always going to be tough. We gave a good account of ourselves and went 1-0 up after 20 minutes but they had a penalty before half-time which was against the run of play.

“Their second was a bit fortunate, it killed us off. They’re a strong side and you’re not going to score many goals up there.

“The third they scored on the break, but we gave them a good scare for an hour. It wasn’t to be.”

James believed the penalty call was debatable, despite what he described as visible “contact”.

He said: “Their lad got into the box and tried getting between Brandon and Jason. It was 50/50.

“I think he’s left his leg in. There was definitely contact, the lad knew what he was doing.”

James added that Westland’s second goal also proved fortuitous.

“It was a ball into the box, it kind of hit (Payne) and Anthony tried to parry it. It looped over him and the lad got a tap-in. It was a poor one to concede.

“We didn’t really create that much second half. They’re defensively strong. You’ve got to try and keep them out and unfortunately we couldn’t do it.”

Dorchester Sports now turn their attentions to an away clash with Holt United on Saturday, October 13.
