LIVERPOOL 2

Linnett 18, Clarke 86

YEOVIL TOWN 1

Heatherson 28

YEOVIL Town Ladies were narrowly beaten on the road for the second game in a row as a late Jess Clarke finish broke the Glovers’ hearts against Liverpool, giving the Reds a 2-1 win.

Manager Lee Burch was forced into one change from the side which lost 2-1 to West Ham a fortnight earlier with Georgia Evans replacing the injured Bonnie Horwood.

It was an entertaining match with both sides enjoying spells of possession early on. Yeovil looked dangerous from set-pieces with Megan Alexander and Hannah Short putting the home side’s defence under immense pressure as the match progressed.

But, it was first blood to the home side and the Glovers were hit on the break after 18 minutes.

Kirsty Linnett took full advantage and hammered the ball home from close range. It was a setback but the visitors did not let their heads drop and stayed solid before deservedly getting back in the game 10 minutes later.

An excellent flick-on from Shannon Albuery found Annie Heatherson in space in the box and she made no mistake with her finish to level up the score and it remained that way until half-time.

The second half started very much as the first did, with both sides knowing a win was in their sights.

Yeovil’s number one Megan Walsh was in scintillating form and, on 67 minutes, denied the home side a second goal with a fantastic fingertip save from a strong Clarke effort before following it up with a brilliant save with her feet.

After the corner was played in Walsh then claimed well, in what was a fine performance from the visitors’ goalkeeper.

Yeovil continued to hold their own but their hearts were to be broken just six minutes from time.

Clarke again was tormenting the Glovers’ defence and Satara Murray’s ball found her in space to slide the ball into the back of the net.

The visitors tried desperately to grab a late equaliser but it was not to be.

A fourth consecutive loss leaves Yeovil rooted to the bottom of the Women’s Super League having conceded 15 goals and scored just two.

Yeovil next face Bristol City, who occupy seventh, at Dorchester’s Clayson Stadium in a west country derby on Sunday (3pm).
