BRIDPORT saw their Les Phillips Cup first round match abandoned due to a suspected broken leg to Clevedon Town’s Morgan Williams with the two sides drawing 0-0 at the time.

The injury was sustained late on following a tackle from Braedon Symes, which was not malicious to the point the referee did not blow for a foul.

Once the injury was realised however, the match was abandoned with five minutes to go while the teams waited for an ambulance and it will instead be played again on Wednesday.

Bridport boss Adam Fricker said: “They both went in for it, there was nothing malicious about it (the tackle) it was a firm and fair tackle. The referee did not even blow for a foul so obviously that says it all.

“But unfortunately what can happen in these circumstances is that one player can come off worse.

“The decision was made by the referee and their management. For us, first and foremost it is about doing the right thing so we agreed.”

Discussing Symes, Fricker said: “It was just a standard sort of tackle, but sometimes these things happen and you can get caught wrong or one player does not go in as fully committed as the other.

“There was certainly no

malice in it.

“We just wish the lad a speedy recovery.

“For us, football does not really come into it when you are in a situation like that.”

Bridport had been dominant during the encounter, with Sam Clark having missed several good chances.

Clark had a superb game for the Bees but was unable to find a route through to beat Clevedon goalkeeper Connor Sidley-Adams.

Clevedon had been a man down, as Alex Camm was sent off after 39 minutes, but Bridport were unable to take advantage of the extra body.

Bridport had been playing well, boosted by their recent 3-1 wins over Roman Glass St George and Hengrove Athletic.

The Bees also welcomed new signing Owen Irish, who is set to help the club out by playing in midweek matches and he started in defence for Bridport.

Bridport travel to Hallen on Saturday for their Toolstation Western Premier Division encounter (3pm).
