DORSET 2 DEVON 1
DORSET Under-16s beat westcountry counterparts Devon 2-1 to win three Pro-Direct South & West Counties Championship points and the Fred Bacon Memorial Trophy.
The silverware is contested annually between the two counties at youth level.
Devon started the game, played at the Specsavers Stadium, Hamworthy, on the front foot without causing Harry Phillips in the Dorset goal too many problems.
However, it was the hosts who took the lead on 21 minutes following some neat footwork from Cameron Munn.
The Devon goalkeeper brought the Dorset man down with his outstretched arm and the Hamworthy United ace dusted himself off and coolly converted the spot-kick.
The visitors equalised in first-half injury time. Sam Stapleton converting from a well-worked Devon move.
Despite a string of substitutions from both sides, the game remained a good advert for youth football with both sides taking their turn in pressing forward in their quest for a winner.
Dorset defended particularly well from dead-ball kicks being faced with a string of tall Devon defenders.
With eight minutes remaining, a free-kick from George Carter found Munn in space outside of the Devon penalty area, his well-struck shot gave James Weeks no chance to secure the win for the hosts.
After the match, the Devon captain Weeks presented the trophy to Dorset skipper Alfie Woods.
Dorset next play Wiltshire in Corsham on Sunday.
