STEVE Thompson slammed Dorchester’s performance as “a shambles” and “a disgrace” as his side were thumped 5-0 by Chesham United in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

Chesham, who had been bottom of the table, plundered four goals in the second half to coast to a huge win over the Magpies, who had Callum Rose sent off in the first half.

When asked what he said to the players after the match, boss Thompson simply replied: “I just told them it was a shambles and a disgrace from all of us.”

Thompson heavily criticised his side’s performance across both halves, describing it as “poor” and added his side looked like they were at the bottom of the table.

“I thought it was poor in the second half as well.

“I thought it was a shambles and a disgrace to lose 5-0 to the side at the bottom of the table, with no disrespect to Chesham at all.

“They certainly did not look bottom of the league, we looked bottom of the league so it was a disgrace and a shambles in the first half and the second half I thought.

“Obviously in particular with the second half with four goals going in.”

Thompson also discussed Rose’s sending off, which happened late on in the first half through two consecutive yellow cards after a poorly timed tackle and a shove on Chesham’s Lewis Rolfe.

Thompson said: “It doesn’t help, I am not going to use the 10 men as an excuse, but it does not help obviously.

“It was needless again, it was another needless sending off. So in every way it was a shambolic and disgraceful result and performance.”

Thompson admitted he did not see the sending off due to having turned round, but reiterated that it was needless.

“I did not see it because I had turned round, but it was a needless sending off.

“To be fair I think we have had six sending offs and four of them have been needless this season.

“That does not help but like I said I do not want to use 10 men as an excuse.

“They were the better team in the first half, even though we had two or three chances in the first half.

“They were far, far superior in the second half.”

When asked if he was relatively hopeful after the first half, with the Magpies just a goal and a man down, Thompson said he had been, but admitted that the second goal finished the game.

Thompson said: “You hope that the 10 men can dig in and somehow get a draw out of the game or something but that did not happen.

“They scored very early in the second half and that finishes the game there and then.”

Thompson then discussed the options that were presented with him at that stage of the game and said that he went for the jugular to try and rescue a seemingly unlikely point.

Thompson said: “I had the choice then whether to bolster up and just try and keep it or put attacking players on like Aaron Rodriguez and Ashley Pope and try and retrieve something.

“I chose the latter and maybe that backfired but I think if I had chosen the former and then we ended up losing two or three nil with more defensive aspects on the pitch then either way you lose.

“I do not think there was a winning situation there. I could have tried to shore up at 2-0 but I chose to try and put attacking players on.”
