WESTLAND SPORTS 2

DORCHESTER Sports earned a creditable 2-2 draw against a top Westland Sports side but were left to rue missed chances in their Dorset Premier League clash at the Clayson Stadium.

Sports lost Alex Gould early on with a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Ryan Ross which allowed the away side to gain some momentum.

Westland duly took the lead after 12 minutes when a free-kick was not dealt with and Alex Murphy was there to smash the ball past Antony Frost in the Dorchester goal.

Sports then stepped it up and created many chances as Jamie West had a close-range effort well saved by Sam Watts then Jamie Quinton went through one-on-one but put his shot the wrong side of the post.

Quinton then put West through but again Watts saved well.

Hayden Hodges then missed a one-on-one to double the away side’s lead.

However, the hosts did equalise in the 40th minute when Gareth Will played in West and this time he made no mistake.

West did have one more chance before the break when played in by Ross but Watts once more was equal to the task.

Sports emerged from the break looking to take the game to Westlands and earned a deserved lead with the goal of the game.

Starting from the Sports’ defence a superb move found Jamie Rawlings wide on the right and his pass found Will to notch his sixth goal of the season on 47 minutes.

Jason Read had a long shot well saved but it was Murphy who found the net again for Westland with a header from a teasing cross on the hour to bring it level.

Both teams looked to win the game but it was West who had the best chance to win it.

However, West saw his shot fly just inches past the Westland post to bring a thrilling game to an end.

Speaking to Echosport, home assistant-manager Steve Churchill said: “We had the best chances in the game.

“First half we had three or four that we could’ve scored from.

“Just based on the nature of the chances we maybe did enough to edge it but we’re not disappointed with our point – Pat Thomas and Jamie Rawlings were very good for us.”
