HAMWORTHY REC 8

DORCHESTER Sports suffered their worst-ever result as Dorset Premier League leaders ran riot, hammering the hosts 8-1 at the Clayson Stadium.

George Webb and Chris Long smashed hat-tricks, adding to Sam Carter and Brad Hill goals, while Carl Edwards claimed a stunning haul of five assists.

A depleted Sports found it hard work to compete with the men in green from minute one and the away side took the lead on 10 minutes when a shot hit the post and was fortunate to land at the feet of the free striker to tap in.

Sports did battle hard in the first half and made it 1-1 when Ryan Ross recorded a contender for goal of the season when striking a scorcher from 35 yards into the top corner to stun Rec.

However, the reigning champions kept coming and retook the lead when a cross was volleyed in.

At this stage, Sports were well in the game and battling hard but were dealt a bitter blow on 35 minutes when a seemingly soft penalty was given – Sports feeling two fouls were committed in the lead up.

Captain Lewis Amor was sin-binned for his protest and Carter made no mistake from the spot for a 3-1 half-time lead.

The second half was one-way traffic although the fourth goal did not come until the hour mark.

After that, the floodgates opened and Sports crumbled with Rec slicing through with ease, every shot on target ending up in the net.

Hamworthy could have scored more but three or four chances missed the target.

Otherwise, this was a masterclass from the away side with Sports failing to come up with an answer.

Speaking to Echosport, boss Ashley James admitted his side “gave up” after the fourth goal.

He said: “On 65 minutes, when you’re 4-1 down, you expect teams to sit back and soak it up but they just kept coming and it was lucky it wasn’t double figures because they missed a few good chances.

“Even in the 92nd minute they were still wanting more – that’s why they’re top of the league.

“We didn’t really create much and didn’t really make their keeper make a save.

“We worked hard and dug in first half and for 15 minutes of the second half I can’t fault the work rate up until the fourth goal.

“Every time we got the ball they won it back so quickly – it was a tough afternoon. We switched off from a throw in, they scored the fourth and we dropped our heads and gave up I suppose.”

Completing a miserable weekend for the club, Sports’ reserves lost 8-0 at Corfe Mullen in the Dorset Senior League.
