LUCA Martin grabbed a late winner as Balti Sports ended their season with a 1-0 defeat to Westland Sports in the Dorset Premier League.

Balti will finish the league in fourth place irrespective of other teams’ results, while Westland will be hoping to nab second place from Merley Cobham Sports.

Balti started well and were the better side in the first half.

Ricky Lane had an early chance when he burst down the right but his shot hit the side netting for Balti.

Lane then put a great cross in which found Sean Zima towards the back post but he sidefooted the ball against the post and wide in Balti’s best chance of the game.

From a corner, Scott Walker then rifled an effort against the bar from seven yards out.

Westland were able to reply with forays forward of their own, but none came to craft a big chance for the home side.

The two sides went into the break level and the visitors started the second half well, enjoying a good 15 minute spell.

However, at this point the home side began to put a lot of pressure on Balti, who began to tire as they were forced to spend a lot of time on the defensive.

Dangerous crosses were raining in on the Balti defence and eventually they succumbed, with Westland substitute Martin firing in late on to condemn Balti to defeat.

Balti boss Marco Nott admitted it was difficult to lose to a late goal, but was pleased with the effort his side put in against Westland.

Nott said: “It was a bit of a kick in the teeth losing to a last-minute winner.

“I think it was almost a game of two halves.

“I think a draw would have been a fair result, we had the better chances in the first half.

“We were not clinical enough, really.

“In the second half we had a bright 10 or 15 minutes but then Westland applied a lot of pressure on us and we began to tire and we were hanging on a little bit.

“It was a really good effort from the lads.”
