WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley insisted the Terras had only themselves to blame after a gutting 2-1 loss to Dover Athletic in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

Molesley’s men were bidding to reach the main draw for the first time in 12 years and a battling display looked like being rewarded when Jake McCarthy curled home in the 78th minute.

Weymouth were ahead for just four minutes as Jai Reason bent an effort around a Terras’ defence that afforded him too much space.

And the Whites applied the killer touch when goalkeeper Calum Ward’s botched punch fell perfectly for Anthony Jeffery to bury a six-yard tap-in with three minutes left.

“We’ve shot ourselves in the foot with two mistakes,” Molesley admitted. “These things happen and we’ve got the bitter end of it.

“The boys worked really hard. First half we were on top, we hit the crossbar and somehow didn’t get to follow it in.

“Then Calvin (Brooks) has wrapped one just the wrong side of the post. I thought we attacked well and caused them some problems but when you’re on top you’ve got to make that count.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get the rub of the green in the first half. Second half, we started a little poorly didn’t get going.

“But credit to the boys, they rallied and we found our gear. We scored at a good time in the game.

“We just had to see it out and maybe a lapse of concentration, we’ve done a couple of silly things that we wouldn’t usually do.

“We’ve been punished for that and, when you play teams from the higher levels, you can’t give them a leg up like that.”

Molesley added the manner of the Terras’ defeat was more frustrating having taken a late lead.

“It’s not like we’ve been blown away,” he said. “It’s disappointing, we were in the ascendancy. We had a good first half, got ourselves into the lead and surrendered that in not Weymouth fashion.

“Mistakes happen, we all make them, we’ve made a couple and that’s cost us. On the whole, we’ve more than competed with Dover, so we can take some positives out of it. At the moment, it’s quite raw.”
